Welcome to 'Korea in a Global Context'

Welcome to everyone joining this course. I am Yong-Soo Eun, an Associate Professor of Politics and International Studies at Hanyang University, Seoul. I will be the educator of the course.

This course is intended for anyone with an interest in global politics and South Korea’s foreign policy. It does not require any prior experience of studying these subjects.

Each week there are a number of activities that are broken into steps. A step could be a video, an article, a quiz or a discussion. There will also be other optional tasks and exercises you can try to enhance your learning. Each week builds on the last, so we strongly recommend you work through each week in order. You can, of course, work through at your own pace if you need to. Through readings, videos, and discussions, you will explore ‘Korea in a global context’. In addition, this course is designed not for experts, but for general public interested in South Korea and its foreign policy as well as international relations; the level of sophistication in articles, videos, and discussions at each step is thus determined in accordance with this intention.

At the bottom of each Week, you’ll find a list of the journal articles, books or websites that I have referenced in my articles or videos. You are more than welcome to use these reference lists for further reading and may be able to gain access to these resources through your local library.

It is important to acquaint yourself with academic journals and magazines. Here is a list, although not exhaustive, of some of the key journals relating to the study of foreign policy and world politics.

Feel free to post your thoughts on topics and issues addressed each week in the comments box. Tell us what you think! This will certainly enrich our conversations and understandings.

To get it started, let’s introduce ourselves!

It would be great if I could know what you are interested in, what you would expect from this course, what kinds of image do you have as to South Korea, have you been to Korea and so on.
