Introduction to Week 2

Welcome to Week Two!

This week we will be looking at a range of topics relating to Lancaster Castle from the end of the medieval period through to the Georgian era. Along the way we’ll investigate the landscape of the time and the lives of some of the people who lived in it - in particular the notorious case of the Lancashire Witches. This will help us to think about how we know about the past, and some of the issues that historians have to deal with as they use different kinds of evidence.

Dr Stephen Pumfrey is a Senior Lecturer in History at Lancaster University. His research interests lie in the history of Renaissance and early modern science and medicine.

Update: 5 November

Dr Stephen Pumfrey is unfortunately unable to join us this week due to unforeseen circumstances, and so Dr Sam Riches will provide cover in her role as host.
