Although written in 1989, pages 67-69 in the Elton Report outline in plain language why some teachers have fewer inappropriate behaviour issues than others.

Reducing friction in the classroom and maintaining a positive atmosphere requires a set of skills and techniques which support the culture of the school. It is the responsibility of the teacher to reduce the amount and severity of intrusion on student learning.

Pivotal trainer, Bill Gribble (2006), outlines work by Smith and Laslett (1993) that presented a hierarchy of planned teacher behaviours. Using low intrusion teacher behaviours not only supports learning, but also ensures that the vast majority of students don’t end up on ‘punishment road’ (more about this next week).
