Skip to 0 minutes and 0 seconds Hello!! Welcome back to today’s class!! Now, I’m going to introduce you the student achievements through those kinds of curriculum design. First, students may define their learning goals with a participatory research or class design practice. So here you can see, that we take a Chang Geng University Service Corps in 2007 as an example, where students define summer camp goals as evidences. Students discover own skills, gain confidence in discussing their ideas with others, grow by learning. Students hope to motivate local indigenous youth to understand the culture and history of their own villages.
Skip to 1 minute and 1 second Students try to stimulate the interests and enthusiasm of middle school students in Fuhsing Township, Taoyuan County, to participate in community services, and in the future to return to the countryside to participate in the community and establish local services. College students train themselves and juniors in techniques of class counseling, develop willingness to serve over a long period, learning how to organize teams, in order to reach the goals of their services.
Skip to 1 minute and 44 seconds So… We can see, here are the outcomes student assessments of their achievements. Further improvement in communication skills is what they feel confident. They had the courage to express their own positions. They could do appropriate planning in advance. They managed human resources efficiently. And also, they developed abilities to deal with limited space and time. And their experience are profoundly moving a learning process. So… They did volunteer work, but did not constitute selfless giving. The contacts with the community created a sense of belonging. And the mutual simulation with community, mutual progress is evident. Section members coordinated and covered for each selves in the process.
Skip to 2 minutes and 56 seconds Joined in the program in community played a complimentary role, is essential for their understanding their roles in the community. So… Beginning from gaining trust of the residents helped transform residents from “just complain but do nothing” to “we can do it!” It’s the most significant achievement that they can see for themselves.
Skip to 3 minutes and 31 seconds So… There are meanings of students achievement. They improve their ability to communicate with lay persons. They are able to participate in empowering the community-building networks. They learn teamwork and mutual assistance. They discard the arrogance of medical specialists. They become sensitive to power relations in the society, and to human needs and suffering in these. They learn the capacities and strengths of the individuals and the community. And finally, they become the potential for building a humanizing medical culture in Taiwan.
Skip to 4 minutes and 25 seconds So… There are professional responsibility of medical doctors, we shall highlight. Profession are political entities, not just when they form interest groups, but because in the intermediary realm of civil society professions possess the power to encourage, limit, and inform public recognition of and deliberation over social problems.
Skip to 5 minutes and 1 second So… In conclusion, through the kind of community engagements, we hope, physicians can form their own characters and from individual integrity to collective integrity. For the society, we hope to engender public trusts in the medical professions. As a citizen I think that’s an important solution for civic education. It’s enlightened and responsible citizenry. And then, finally, we wish that, accepting concepts of risk-sharing and the responsibility become popular and more acceptance in Taiwan’s societies. So… These are the goals and the achievements of our community engagement practice. If you have any question, feel free to leave your message. Thank you for your attention.
