Introduction to the resident and medication interaction

Now that we have an understanding of medicines law and have identified different types of medicines we may come across in the workplace, it’s time to consider how we can ensure medicines are administered safely to our resident.

We will use the 6 Rights of safe medication administration to achieve this:

1. Right Resident
2. Resident’s Right to Refuse
3. Right Route
4. Right Medication
5. Right Dose
6. Right Time

By the end of the week you should be able to:

1. Describe methods of confirming a resident’s identity

2. Recognise the resident’s wishes and beliefs about medication and shared decision making

3. Describe covert administration of medicines and Human Rights guidance

4. Cite the information that should be on a label for a dispensed medicine

5. Describe the different routes of administration of different formulations and issues associated with tablet crushing

6. Demonstrate good hand hygiene and knowledge of good oral hygiene for residents
