Learn how genomics is changing the future of healthcare

Advances in genomics have opened up exciting new possibilities for healthcare. On this course, you’ll learn what genomics is, and how it can revolutionise patient care. You’ll learn how genomic testing works, and consider the regulatory and ethical issues that surround it.

You’ll explore how genomics can improve patient care by understanding how genomic data helps clinicians to identify illness risk more accurately, using the specific examples of cancer and epidemics such as Zika virus disease. You will also look at the future of genomics, and how it might impact healthcare roles.

Skip to 0 minutes and 9 seconds Over the past 20 years, advances in the field of genomics have led to a range of new products and possibilities for healthcare. So, what is genomics? Genomics is the study of genomes. A genome is the complete map of an organism’s DNA, including all of its genes, like a blueprint for our bodies containing all our genetic instructions. In this course, you will explore some of the latest developments in genomics. You will learn how DNA sequencing is being used to identify an individual’s risk of developing diseases. You will consider the implications of genomics for personalised medical care for genetic diseases, such as cancer, and meet some of the product developers who have revolutionised this field.

Skip to 0 minutes and 54 seconds You will also reflect on the ways in which clinical roles are adapting and evolving as a result of technological developments, debate how these exciting innovations and opportunities have raised a range of ethical and regulatory questions that industry experts are currently grappling with. Discover the expertise and work taking place at the University of Leeds in the field of medtech.
