Discover why mental health matters in the construction industry

Construction has one of the worst rates of mental health issues of any industry. For example, in the UK low-skilled male manual workers are 3.7 times more likely to commit suicide than the national average.

Mental health issues can be caused or exacerbated by the working environment and in construction workers will often experience high workloads, tight deadlines and financial pressures. The ‘macho’ culture within construction often prevents people from speaking out and seeking help.

On this course, you’ll learn what mental health is, how to identify its signs and symptoms, and understand how to manage your own mental well being as well as that of your colleagues. You’ll hear from people in the industry about how to change construction’s culture to end the stigma around mental health.

Skip to 0 minutes and 8 seconds Welcome to this online course on mental health in construction. Within the construction industry, a worker is now more likely to die from suicide than a fall from height. During my presidency at the Chartered Institute of Building, I made a point to put mental health and well-being on the agenda to raise awareness of this silent crisis that is impacting many. During this time, we produced research which found many construction workers were experiencing high levels of stress due to a variety of pressures, including unrealistic deadlines, high workloads, and financial pressures. Many also said that they had not received any form of mental health training or awareness over the past three years.

Skip to 1 minute and 6 seconds And if we want to improve the state of poor mental health in the industry, I believe that training is a fundamental part of that. So a class like this, which provides an introduction to mental health and gives you the tools to understand your own mental health, as well as how you can recognise and help your fellow colleagues, is essential. I trust that you will find this course useful, both in your personal and work life. Thank you.
