Metabolism is a network

A description of metabolism

Metabolism is the collection of chemical reactions performed within a biological system to maintain life. These enzyme catalysed reactions are organised into metabolic pathways and are classified as catabolic (the breakdown of compounds) or anabolic (the synthesis of compounds).

Professor Warwick Dunn provides an overview of metabolism, explains how metabolism links together into a network and charts the history in defining the metabolic map.

Metabolic Pathway Charts

Dr Donald Nicholson developed the first Metabolic Pathways Charts in the 1950s. Some other tools that may aid your study of metabolism include Kegg Pathway Database and MetaCyc: Metabolic Pathways for all Domains of Life.
