Summary of Week 3
Congratulations! You have now completed all the materials on this course. All that remains is the test in Step 3.31.
This week started with the presentation of data in tables and several kinds of graphs. From the video tutorials and the quizzes that followed, you were able to see how information can be presented in all these ways. If you were taking this course to prepare you for employers’ numeracy tests, the skills you will have gained will be very helpful as numerical data will be presented in the form of embedded text, tables and graphs - often all in the same question. You will have to be able to extract the data you need and to ignore everything else.
The second half of the week had a focus on understanding statistics. You covered common calculations of statistical measures such as the mean, median, mode and range. You then learned about some of the issues and some of the things you should think about when faced with statistics in the workplace and in everyday life. Considering how data is collected, analysed and presented will enable you to determine if sufficient rigour has been applied. You were also introduced to some of the statistical vocabulary that you may encounter.
As the three weeks have progressed, the course glossary has been developed. The full version of the glossary is available in Step 3.30. This may be helpful as you continue your revision. All materials will remain online after the end of the course should you wish to return to them.
We suggest that you consider again the Numeracy skills confidence questionnaire that was introduced in Step 1.12. This will help you to identify the progress you have made and any skills areas where you are not confident. If there are any, we suggest you revisit the relevant steps, follow the links to the additional materials and perhaps re-attempt the quizzes. You may also wish to try the National Numeracy Challenge mentioned in Step 1.4 again. As Tony Croft said in Week 1, mathematics is not a spectator sport. You will improve by reflecting on your approach to questions and by doing, by practising.
When you practise, follow the approach we started in Week 1 and have developed throughout the course:
- read the question carefully
- what is it asking?
- what data do you need?
- what data do you have?
- what calculations do you need to perform?
- can you do them?
- is your answer correct?
- if not, why not?
- how could you have saved time?
You should now be well placed to take the course test. We very much hope that you have enjoyed this course. Please share with us your views on this week in Step 3.29 and on the course as a whole after the test in Step 3.32.
If you are taking this course to prepare for employers’ numeracy tests, we wish you every success. The steps this week on preparation for the day, accuracy and speed and the rationale behind numeracy tests should aid your test taking strategies.
