You may have come across the term IoT, or Internet of Things. Let’s simplify the concept: IoT is a term given to “a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction” (TechTarget).

The word “thing” in IoT refers to all things, so long as they are fitted with a built-in sensor and assigned an IP address to enable them to send and receive data over a network. In layperson’s language, this simply means fitting an on-and-off switch into a “thing” to enable it to communicate with other “smart things” via the Internet.

Graphics are better than words in explaining IoT, therefore we suggest you view the two videos and the article that discuss how IoT works and how IoT and omni-channels are merging to provide a higher level shopping experience. The materials will help you understand what IoT is and how it could enhance our way of life.

Now think about loT in relation to logistics activities and supply chains.
