So far we’ve looked at content marketing and the importance of content for your online business.

Now let’s take a look at social media, the ‘other’ digital media that cuts across paid, owned and earned media.

Social media is a collection of applications, platforms and websites in an online community that allows the creation and sharing of content, information and contacts.

Social media marketing can allow a business to access a targeted audience via specific social media platforms. There are many types of social media tools including forums, blogs, social networking, social bookmarking, social curation and wikis. All types of social media have been developed to target and interact with audiences in a particular way; this means that choosing the right tool for the right job is important to achieve your marketing goals.

Advantages and disadvantages

There are many advantages to using social media, such as the ability to reach large potential audiences in a fast and low cost manner. In addition, social media facilitates open and convenient communication between an organisation and their target market – providing direct contact. Social media also provides a great opportunity to generate leads and increase web traffic to your website.

Social media also has its challenges. For example, the fast-paced nature of this communication means that information may have a limited lifespan, and producing relevant and timely information for your target market can be very time-consuming.


Activity

Social media is a trend that dominates the digital realm. With so much choice surrounding the various platforms it can be difficult to decide which ones to use.

Develop a list of the social media tools that would be helpful for your online business. List how you believe each channel will help you achieve your marketing goals.
