Finding evidence for your practice
As mentioned in the video, teachers need access to the latest evidence in order to be able to effectively respond to students’ learning needs. This is often a challenge for physical education teachers as journal articles often have subscription costs.
Access to research, however, is changing. More articles are being made open access which means that anyone can read research, with the right link of course. While open access is a developing area, there is, currently research available.
In Week 1 you identified your students learning needs. We want you to now find an article that may help you to better understand these needs and be able to respond to them more effectively. Google Scholar is one way to access free research and we hope the following steps will help you in accessing research to inform your practice.
(1) Go to Google Scholar and search for an article that is relevant to your students learning needs. For example, you may have identified social learning, girls disengagement, motivation, motor skill development
When typing into Google Scholar put the keywords into quotations. This allows for a narrower search and articles specific to your search to become more prominent in the search results. For example, “social learning”
While articles outside of physical education may also be useful, if you are looking for a physical education specific article you can also include the term physical education into your search. For example, “social learning” “physical education”
To be able to access the most current articles, in the sidebar you can also select a specific date.
(2) You may have found an article that you would like to access, but you cannot access this. In this instance you could:
Email the author, the author’s name and affiliation are often found on the abstract page and you can search for the author and email them asking them for a copy. Most authors would welcome this type of email!
Find them on social media, such as Twitter, and send them a tweet
While Google Scholar is a good way to access research, you may not always be able to access the articles you want, even if you email the author. Instead you can look at all open access articles that are published in journals. This is a developing area, but you can see current research that is beginning to be published by searching specifically for open access articles. The following is an example of how you might do this:
Search for the Sport, Education and Society journal in your web browser and follow the link
You should appear at this page: http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/cses20/current
On the left-hand side you will see a tab that states open access and it will take you to this page: http://www.tandfonline.com/action/showOpenAccess?journalCode=cses20
In here are all open access articles for you to read specific to the journal
Many other journals have an open access section and you might find the following journals useful:
- Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy
- Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport
Finally, Taylor and Francis release spotlight articles each month. These are articles that are made open access for the month. It is worth looking out for these.
