Poverty and Educational Attainment
In the opening video, Allen mentioned educational research that has been conducted with children from high poverty backgrounds.
To begin this section, we would like to pose an important question.

Read the article by Goodman and Gregg (2010), ‘Poorer childrens’ educational attainment: how important are attitudes and behaviour?’ to help you explore how poverty and educational attainment are linked.
In the article, Goodman and Gregg find clear links between poverty and low attainment. Drawing from a number of studies and large datasets they were able to demonstrate unequivocally that growing up in poverty is a barrier to achieving your potential in school.
