Skip to 0 minutes and 7 secondsHello and welcome to week two of Perioperative Medicine in Action. This week we're going to be focusing on the patient at the heart of the decision-making process and how as health care professionals we can empower patients to make those decisions. We will be starting by looking at a key document from the King's fund which sets about making shared decision-making a reality. We will then hear from doctors John Carlisle and Mike Swart from Torbay, who give us their opinion on shared decision-making We will investigate the resources available to patients to help them make operative decisions, and then see an example of shared decision-making in action.
Skip to 0 minutes and 44 secondsThe second half of the week, we will look at risk assessment so we can help our patients make better and more informed choices and also enable us as clinicians to plan the right care for each individual patient. You will get the chance to use risk assessment tools as well as hear about limitations and current research in risk assessment from Dr. Ramani Moonesinghe the current Director of the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia.
Welcome to Week 2
Welcome to Week 2 of Perioperative Medicine in Action. In the video above, you can hear the course educators discuss the learning aims for the week. Our key themes for the week are shared decision making, pre-operative risk assessment and outcome measures.
Before you start this week’s learning, reflect on what it has been like for you or a family member to be a patient and complete the poll in the next step. We hope this week’s learning will help you to help your patients make the right decisions for themselves.
