Skip to 0 minutes and 7 secondsHello and welcome to the final week of perioperative medicine in action where we will be tackling two of the biggest challenges facing perioperative medicine. To start the week we'll be looking at perioperative care for the elderly patient. We will read articles about the health care needs of the elderly, hear from patients themselves on their needs, and review a case study of a complex decision-making process in a multi-morbid patient. Before hearing from a service dedicated to improving perioperative care for the elderly, we will also look at the big conversations needed as we contemplate end of life care. The second major challenge facing perioperative medicine is money.
Skip to 0 minutes and 48 secondsIn this final part of the course, we will look at the changing demographic of our population and the difficulties health care services are facing in the current economic climate. Hopefully, we can demonstrate that well delivered perioperative care is at least part of the solution to these problems.
Welcome to Week 4
Welcome to the final week of Perioperative Medicine in Action. As you have heard above, this week we will be concentrating on two of the big challenges facing all healthcare systems: an ageing population and the rising cost of healthcare.
We will start by examining the unique problems encountered by elderly patients in the perioperative period and learn about a model of care that is improving outcomes for this group.
The second part of the week concentrates on the fiscal challenges facing healthcare economies. Professor Mike Grocott finishes the course by outlining how perioperative medicine is the value proposition and can be part of the solution.
