An introduction to Shots in Sequence

Now that we’re familiar with camera shots, we’re going to use some frames from the short animated film, Miss Todd (2013), to look at how the sequence in which shots are presented can alter the meaning of a story.

The theory of editing teaches us that audiences will connect images together to create meaning. We are going to order a sequence of six stills to create our own narratives. This should reveal different avenues of storytelling according to the chosen sequence.

From simple sequencing tasks like the one we’ll try in the next step, to more complicated sentence and grammar activities, sequencing can provide educators with a variety of opportunities for literacy-based activities.

By using Shots in Sequence you can help students to:

• Retrieve information from images

• Deduce the likely order of the sequence from information presented

• Storyboard the sequence and turn it into text

• Infer meaning created by the order of shots

• Contextualise and predict what might happen next.

Although the film Miss Todd is available in full on Vimeo, please refrain from watching it at this stage. Let’s see how creative we can all be first!
