We have seen in the previous steps of this activity that China has experienced incredible growth recently. China is indeed one of the great economic success stories in history. In light of this great economic success, however, we are left with an important question: is economic growth the same thing as development?

In this film, Professor Oliver Morrissey offers various measures of China’s economy. He further discusses whether these measures of economic growth truly capture a country’s development and he cautions against falling into the trap of falsely equating economic growth with development.
