At the foot of this page you will find links to high resolution PDF plans of Portus in each of the six periods discussed in this course. There are also links to our Twitter feed and to a clickable version of the maps.
We recommend that you download the plans now to your PC or mobile device so that you can easily refer to them throughout the course. You may want to print them so you can easily add annotations, or find out how you can annotate PDFs on-screen.
Don’t worry if it all looks a bit complicated - soon we will take you on a tour of the site, and as the weeks progress you will become an expert on what and where everything is at the site!
This course introduces lots of specialised archaeological and technical terms, and these are briefly explained in the Glossary and also in a step’s text the first time they are used. An online search for that term will usually give you a much more detailed description if you want to learn more.
You may wish to bookmark the Glossary so that you can open it in a new browser tab and refer to it easily when you are studying this course. Alternatively, there is a PDF version that you can download.
