Everything I thought I knew about education actually turned out to be minimal compared to the knowledge and understanding that I have developed since that starting point. When I first started, I thought it was going to be lots of fun and I would find it quite easy. I always got on well with children and thought teaching them, especially the youngest ones, would be quite straightforward. I was definitely wrong about that. I remember being asked in my interview for teacher training why I wanted to be a teacher. I said, because I love working with children and I wanted to make that difference.

Skip to 0 minutes and 45 secondsThat was fine, but then they asked me how I would make that difference and what skills I would bring to the classroom to make that difference, and I did get a little bit stuck. To be honest, I wish I'd thought about teaching a little bit more before I applied. It would have given me a little bit more of a clearer starting point for the areas I most wanted to focus on in my own personal development. It would have also made me sound a little bit better in my interview. I'm very grateful for them giving me a place, as I don't think I came across as particularly aware of what teaching would truly involve.
