Analysing the learner style questionnaire
If you found that you selected mostly 1s, you would be someone who prefers doing things to learn. You would be referred to as a predominantly kinaesthetic learner.
If you chose mostly 2s you prefer visual learning and may like to use lots of post-it notes and coloured mind maps to help you learn.
Mostly 3s would suggest you prefer auditory learning. You might find it helps you to record information and listen to it as a form of revision.
Mostly 4s would suggest you prefer reading material, so you might be someone who prefers to write descriptions of diagrams you are presented with, to help absorb the information.
Many of you will have a combination of numbers, and if you visit longer questionnaires you will have a more complete idea of your strengths and weaknesses.
At university you cannot chose how material will be delivered to you, but through your independent study, you can chose how to develop your own revision material.
There are much longer versions of this type of questionnaire on line and you can have a go at finding them. They are often referred to as a VARK questionnaire. The important thing to consider is that the areas you are weakest in are the areas you will have to work hardest in when receiving information.
As a rule of thumb, subjects such as literature and history are generally delivered in auditory and reading forms. Science subjects most often in a visual and kinaesthetic form. What you need to do as an independent learner, for revision purposes, is to take the information you are given and turn it into material which you find most easy to absorb. So, if you prefer reading, take diagrams and turn them into descriptions; if you prefer visual information, take descriptions and turn them into diagrams.
Remember in the seminar students talked about ways they manage their revision material to play to their strengths. This is even more important at university because of the amount of information you will be expected to take on board, and the speed of delivery. It would be a very good plan to work on how to maximise your learning potential in this way before you arrive at university.
