Before you read the poem

In the next step, you will see a copy of the poem. Read it to yourself slowly and, preferably, read it aloud, as you can get the rhythm and feel of the poem better this way. Jot down anything about it that catches your attention. What is the poem saying to you, for example, and how is it expressing this?

You might also want to note any words or phrases that you find unexpected, difficult or confusing. Do not be put off by such difficulties; it is often the moments when we feel unsure that lead us, in the end, to the most insightful readings.
