What happens if you try and make Wordsworth’s sonnet speak to an entirely new context; your own? Are there any aspects of your own culture or society that make the issue of liberty and ‘too much liberty’ feel pressing again?
Might the anti-European Union sentiment expressed by BREXIT, for example, find any sympathy with the arguments expressed within Wordsworth’s sonnet? If so, this does not mean that Wordsworth would necessarily have been a supporter of BREXIT had he been alive now, but that his poem has the capacity to work its way into and speak to new contexts. And these new contexts may have particular political, or even philosophical reverberations that you might want to think about.
In the following step you are to watch a video of a group of sixth form students working on the same poem that you have just been exploring.
