Skip to 0 minutes and 9 secondsWriting at university or as we call it academic writing, is not easy, it takes a lot of thought, a lot of practice, you have to really focus on what your message is, what you're trying to say, what key things you're trying to get across, and with all this the idea is thinking about your reader. What your reader is taking from your writing. What message you're trying to get across to your reader.

Skip to 0 minutes and 38 secondsIt might help to put yourself in the position of the reader. They may be thinking "what's this piece of writing about?", "what are they trying to tell me?" and this is where the phrase 'persuasive writing' comes in. To every piece of writing, there is a point to it, a message that you're trying to get across

Skip to 1 minute and 2 secondsThe exercises this week used the personal statement as used in the university application, as a model for persuasive writing, but the skills you learn will be useful to all sorts of pieces of writing that you do at university and beyond.
