Our first activity will look at examples of vector control methods used against Aedes mosquitoes. We'll cover practical techniques used at national, community, and household level, including destruction of larval habitats, insecticide spraying, use of treated screens and bed nets, repellents, and repellent impregnated clothing. The second activity will outline some of the current strategies in place to prevent the spread of Zika, with discussions from individuals on the front line in South America and how control strategies are being implemented in different real life settings.

Welcome to Week 3

Welcome to Week 3. We have now learned more about the biology, behaviour, and characteristics of the Aedes mosquito, and with this knowledge can now progress to thinking about the practical solutions we can employ to control the mosquito population.

What will we learn?

Throughout this week we will:

  • Highlight vector control methods used against Aedes mosquitoes, including destruction of larval habitat, insecticide spraying, use of treated screens and bed-nets, repellents, and repellent-impregnated clothing
  • Discover some of the current strategies in place to prevent the spread of Zika in real life settings
  • Explore our current limitations and reflect upon the need for better quality studies and novel vector control methods, discussing where we need to target our efforts to close knowledge gaps and become better prepared to fight diseases like Zika.
