Learn about about the complexities of personality, and what makes us - us

On this course, you’ll examine the factors that influence something as complex as your personality. You will explore the work of Freud on the psychodynamic perspective of personality, and consider theories of behaviourism, humanism and personality traits, considering how personality is influenced by the culture of the society in which you were raised.

You will also investigate models, theories and approaches of pioneers who contributed to our understanding of personality before examining personality tests to determine how they can be used to better understand our decision making process.

Skip to 0 minutes and 12 seconds MUNDY PHD: Like many other aspects of our lives, our personality helps differentiate ourselves from other people. Why do some people enjoy being the centre of attention while others prefer solitude? How does success or failure change us? As a science, how does psychology attempt to explain and measure personality, and determine how it influences our behaviour? Hi. I’m Matthew Mundy, and I’m the Director of Education for the School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University in Australia. In this course, you’ll investigate the psychology of personality. You’ll be introduced to the dimensions that psychologists believe are important for measuring personality, and you’ll explore the mental processes we use to manage challenging or difficult situations.

Skip to 0 minutes and 55 seconds Many of you have probably completed a personality test at some time in your life. In this course, you’ll investigate the psychometric properties of a personality test, and find out how different types of tests can provide us with useful insight into human behaviour. This introductory course is designed for everyone, regardless of experience or background. However, learners who have already completed a bachelor degree in a discipline other than psychology and who are interested in expanding their science and research skills would be able to receive additional benefits from this course. No prior study of psychology is required or expected.
