Life beyond work

We all know there’s more to life than work, which is why Rehabilitation Counsellors consider the range of ‘life domains’ when assessing people’s needs.

Life domains refer to the environments involved in how we live our lives. This includes our:

  • personal
  • family
  • social and
  • work environments.

When looking for work and building a career it is important to be mindful of life domains and think about how each one may influence another. This forms the basis for the ‘whole of person’ orientation that Rehabilitation Counsellors take with clients.

There are many factors that influence or play a role in each of our life domains, such as our individual:

  • financial situation
  • living and accommodation arrangements
  • available mode of transport
  • health status
  • employment history
  • skills and level of education
  • social network and personal relationships
  • interests and hobbies.

Cultural factors and any legal issues people may be facing can also impact significantly on their life domains.

A strengths-based, holistic approach to decision making.

In considering what people with disability really need and working to facilitate their participation, a good starting point is to first identify what strengths and supports exist for them. Identifying the strengths of the individual as well as the strengths within their environment, can lead to the promotion of the person’s growth, development and capacity to reach their potential.

Of course, the fulfilment of a person’s needs is highly influenced by the environments and communities in which they live.
