Practice prepares the brain for new learning
Newly learned material will soon be forgotten without sufficient opportunities to recall the information and practice.
“It is relatively easy to place something in a filing cabinet, but it can be very difficult to recall where exactly we filed it. Rehearsal helps us remember where we filed it.” (Rosenshine, 2010)
Rosenshine points out that successful teachers spent more time guiding the students’ practice of new material, checking for student understanding and providing additional explanations and examples. This reflects the scientific understanding that practice supports the formation of long term memory and makes it easier to retrieve knowledge when it is needed.
