Explore how to adapt your practice to support special educational needs

This course aims to develop your ability to adapt your practice and offer a variety of activities that retain pupil interest. It will support you in understanding the clinical needs of children and how this has an impact on planning, with a focus on children with English as an additional language (EAL) and language difficulties, Autism/Asperger’s, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

By the end of the course, you‘ll be able to...

  • Lead pupil progress, demonstrating knowledge of the physical, social and intellectual development of children
  • Improve and adapt teaching to support pupils’ education at different stages of development considering EAL strategies and the link to literacy scores, as well as challenges for native speakers
  • Apply and adapt practice to offer a variety of activities to retain pupil interest, with particular focus on children with EAL and language difficulties
  • Apply relevant data to plan delivery of content, plan how to monitor and record progress, set targets, and plan subsequent lessons
  • Explain the clinical needs of children and how this impacts planning, for pupils with ASD, ADHD and OCD
  • Discuss and be able to write an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for a pupil
