Skip to 0 minutes and 8 secondsDR HELEN FARR: Hello and welcome to week four. This week we're going to be looking at the methods and practice of maritime archaeology and discussing the legislation and ethics surrounding working under water. You'll also get your chance to talk to us directly at the Google hangout.

Welcome to Week 4

Welcome to Week 4 of our Shipwrecks and Submerged Worlds course. This week we will be exploring the practice of maritime archaeology, the ethical issues associated with it and the future of the discipline.

By the end of this week you should be able to:

  • Describe the principal investigative techniques used by Maritime Archaeologists
  • Recognise the debates surrounding ethics which emerge from working underwater
  • Differentiate between preservation in situ and preservation by record (through excavation)
  • Identify areas within which the field could move forward.

We hope you enjoy this week.

In the video, Helen mentions a Google Hangout. Unfortunately, for logistical reasons it is not possible for that to take place during this course run. You are welcome to watch the Google Hangout on ethics and maritime archaeology from the first run of the course or any of the weekly question and answer sessions that took place during the last course run.

During this course run we are holding weekly Tweetchats, with the final one taking place on Thursday 23rd February at 8pm (GMT). If you are unable to join us, a summary will be shared online afterwards.

Remember, when you’ve finished a step just click the pink ‘Mark as complete’ button. This will allow you to see at a glance which steps you have completed on your ‘to do’ list, and so we can show you how much you’ve completed on your Progress page.
