What is simulation?

Simulation involves the imitation of the operation of a real-world situation (process or system) over time for the purpose of understanding and improving system performance.

The video illustrates how simulation technique can be used to assist with solving complex design and management logistics problems.

Fundamental concepts

Below are some of the fundamental concepts (system components) in simulation that you will come across throughout this course and program:

Concept Definition
System Defined to be a collection of entities (eg customers or machines) that act and interact together towards accomplishing some logical end (completed service). Examples include transportation, logistics and distribution operations.
Model A simpler representation of a system, allowing investigation of the system properties and, in some cases, prediction of future outcomes.
Modelling The process of generating a model as a conceptual representation of some phenomenon.
