| System | Defined to be a collection of entities (eg customers or machines) that act and interact together towards accomplishing some logical end (completed service). Examples include transportation, logistics and distribution operations. |
| Model | A simpler representation of a system, allowing investigation of the system properties and, in some cases, prediction of future outcomes. |
| Modelling | The process of generating a model as a conceptual representation of some phenomenon. |
