What Does Contemporary Slavery Look Like?

Free the Slaves is a leading antislavery organisation, co-founded by Kevin Bales in 2000.

Please watch this short film, where the Free the Slaves team exposes what slavery looks like today, with original footage and photographs.

The film explores slavery as an ancient abuse that persists throughout the world and is one of the greatest human rights challenges of history. Contemporary slavery looks different than the ships and shackles we learned about in history classes. Today, it is largely hidden from sight. People now are trapped by different forces – less visible, but just as powerful. The film also examines how Free the Slaves assists enslaved people to break free.

After watching the film, please also explore CNN’s Freedom Project - read and watch as many of their reports as you want. Share links to any reports that you find particularly interesting in the comments, as recommendations for other learners, with a note about why.
