Job profiles and market data, used selectively, can really help your students understand the trends which are shaping future jobs. For instance, UKCES reports identify that the proportion of those in employment with undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications will rise from 28.7% in 2002 to 51.3% in 2022.
Help your students understand the new knowledge, skills and aptitudes which they will need to develop. For example, young people will need to be adaptable, flexible, willing to up-skill and motivated to adjust to different work environments.
Technology will increasingly pervade every work environment. Trends in technological developments suggest that boundaries will slowly dissolve between sectors and will change traditional modes of working. This will require continuous up-skilling and adaptation from employees to meet business needs change.
Resilience is frequently cited by employers as an essential quality for young people to possess to be able to cope with set-backs and criticism, to be motivated to overcome obstacles and to stay calm under pressure.
Finally, point out to students that there will undoubtedly be jobs around by 2030 that don’t exist yet. If we think back just 20 years, could you have predicted current jobs like social media manager, off-shore wind farm engineer or web architect would have existed?
