In this step, you can look at two more student scenarios and use the UCAS course search tool to see if you can find the answers to the tasks we have set.

B. Branching out

Student B is studying a mix of A levels and a BTEC at a sixth form college. She expressed an interest in studying law during her GCSEs, but has recently had a change of mind and now is keen to forge a career working primarily outdoors in the countryside.

She has gained some practical experience as a volunteer on a local woodland conservation project and has also observed a neighbour who is a tree surgeon at work. She is keen to look at courses that focus on woodland, forestry or arboriculture. She is prepared to study anywhere in England or Scotland to gain a degree.

Task: Use the UCAS website to identify how many English and Scottish providers run honours degrees with ‘Arboriculture’ in the title. Which Scottish providers offer honours degree courses with ‘Forest’ or ‘Forestry’ in the title?

C. Heard it through the grapevine

Student C has gained some experience grape picking for three months in the South of France during a gap year. Although hampered by rudimentary French, she also gained an insight into the process of making wine and this has ignited a real interest in taking things further by gaining a professional qualification.

She thinks it won’t be possible to gain a degree level qualification in wine making or production in the UK.

Task: Use the UCAS website to see if it is possible to take a degree which will enable her to get into the wine production industry.
