Alternatives to university - other post-18 options

In an earlier step, we heard the careers advisers talking about how important it is that your students consider all their post-18 options and discuss the pros and cons of each.

For students who are undecided, whose plans have changed, or for whom university isn’t the right choice now, there are plenty of other options for them to explore.

In this step we hear from three students considering some of the alternatives to going on to full-time study at university:

1. School leaver programmes - there is a wide range of employer-led programmes for school-leavers which give students a direct route into the world of work and may include obtaining a qualification as part of the programme.

2. Apprenticeships: these are training for a specific job so it’s important students are confident it’s the right one for them. They need to find out as much as they can about the job role and the career and progression route the apprenticeship could lead to. There are Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships as well as the new Degree Apprenticeships which enable students to achieve a full bachelor’s or master’s degree as part of their apprenticeship. They are available in a wide range of sectors - from engineering and boat building to veterinary nursing and accountancy.

3. Going into work: identifying their strengths, values, interests, and ambitions will help students to focus on the sort of work and career pathway they’re interested it. It provides the starting point for researching job roles and employment opportunities. Students need to set out what they have to offer – map their skills and qualities, work background, qualifications, achievements, interests, and career plans to the job roles they want and what employers are looking for. Doing their research – it’s really worth spending time swotting up on the industries and employers offering the job roles they’re interested in. This will really help them prepare good applications and to be ready for those interviews.

4. Taking a Gap Year: it can be a good choice for students who are undecided about university or what degree they want to take. It offers the opportunity to gain skills and experiences and gives them time to focus on what you want to do next. A productive gap year can enhance their CV and their higher education application. Admissions tutors know that some students may take a little time to readjust back to studying, but most former gap year students are generally more focused and responsible.

Here are some questions you can pose to help students to focus on making the best use of a gap year:

  1. Why are you taking a break from studying? Think about getting the right balance between time spent and benefits gained.

  2. Do you want to test yourself in some way? Maybe you want to help the environment and be part of a well- established scheme?

  3. Perhaps you want to pass on your existing skills to help others – volunteer teaching placements are increasingly popular.
