Here are the key ideas that you must take away from this week:

  • The problem of the exploitation of fossil resources does not lie in their scarcity, but rather in the residues of their combustion, and namely in the accumulation in the atmosphere of greenhouse gases (GHG). This is why the Paris Agreements at the COP21 took place in November 2015, agreeing to limit the CO2 emissions in order to curb the temperature rise to 2ºC, leaving two thirds of the known reserves unexploited.

  • The availability of energy and the power of energy resources in a society determines the level of socio-economic complexity that can be developed.

  • The energy transition consisting in the total substitution of fossil fuels for renewable resources, implies a change in the consumption models due to a reduction in the available energy density, and to the shift from using a stock to managing a flux. These physical and chemical aspects have a great influence on the necessary consumption model change, and generate considerable non-technical barriers to the transition.
