AMS in South Africa
Research pharmacist, Dr Oluchi Mbamalu interviews Professor Marc Mendelson. Based at the University of Cape Town, Professor Mendelson is a Professor of Infectious Diseases and Head of the Division of Infectious Diseases & HIV Medicine, Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town.
Professor Mendelson stresses the importance of using specific terminology when talking about this subject. He points out antimicrobial resistance can include resistance found in viruses and protozoa as well as bacterial resistance. This can cause issues with members of the public who are not used to the terms, and healthcare specialists in South Africa who are also dealing with the issue of antiretroviral resistance.
Dr Mbamalu asks about his experiences championing antimicrobial stewardship; one of which includes his help to establish the South African Antibiotic Stewardship Programme. Professor Mendelson also shares his thoughts on the challenges that face antimicrobial stewardship in South Africa; the main challenge being ‘getting people to buy-in’ to the concept.
