Welcome to week 5

There is no doubt that China is changing fast. New buildings, new trains, new images, new lifestyles – we are overwhelmed by new things, and have little time for those disappearing. This week, we will look at three projects about remembrance, and discuss how socially engaged art can contribute to the creation of collective memory.

The three case studies are:

  • “Yumen” created by Zhuang Hui and Dan’er in 2007 and 2008,
  • “Tongyuanju” by Wang Haichuan, since 2010,
  • and “Kunshan under Construction” by a group of young artists, from 2010 to 2012.
