A successful business starts with a clear vision and a thorough understanding of the opportunities available to turn that vision into a reality. Whether you have an idea for a future venture or you already have a side-line business whilst studying, this course will help you consider your vision and explore the opportunities available. It will give you the time to plan and help you to start documenting your thoughts in a structured business plan while allowing you to share your ideas with others.

This course is the first in a series of six about ‘starting a business’.

Maybe you already have an idea, something you have been nurturing for a while or maybe it’s just a seed that needs cultivating or maybe you are just looking for inspiration. This is the first course in a series of six designed to help you on the journey of entrepreneurship. This course explores the importance of vision and opportunity when starting a business, discovering and creating opportunities essential to the notion of entrepreneurship. There is much debate about whether entrepreneurs discover opportunities, such as spotting a gap in a market or create opportunities from their knowledge or experience.

Through videos, activities, and quizzes, this series of business courses introduce case studies of young entrepreneurs who are already on the journey. They share their business challenges with you and a panel of business advisors.     • Welcome

      This week, you'll explore the importance of vision and opportunity when starting a business. But before you get started, take the time to meet your fellow learners and share your reasons for joining this course.

    • Discovering and creating opportunities

      Behind every great business is a brilliant idea; an idea that comes just at the right time and in the right place. This activity introduces you to a variety of successful businesses, exploring their vision and opportunity.

    • Emma's business challenge

      In this activity, Emma shares her business challenge. She has a number of opportunities open to her and needs to decide which direction her business should take. Join a team of advisers in helping Emma decide how to move forward.

    • Summary

      To close this week, you are introduced to some of the options for studying at the University of Leeds. You also look forward to next week.

    Realising your vision

    • About Week 2

      This week, you have the opportunity to spend some dedicated time defining your business vision. If you choose, you can communicate with other learners from around the world to share and discuss your ideas.

      In this activity, you have the opportunity to develop your skills by applying the opportunity business model to an enterprise of your choice.

    • Your business plan

      Throughout this series of courses, you are encouraged to document your ideas and thoughts in order to produce a coherent business plan.
