Understand how to use feedback to improve your STEM activities

Responding to feedback is a crucial part of volunteering with young people, it can quickly help you understand how effective you are and show you what you need to change to improve.

On this course you will learn how to use different tools to get immediate feedback during STEM activities. You will also reflect on and explore further ways to improve your ability to work with educators and inspire young people about STEM subjects. Through reflecting on feedback you’ll consider links with your personal and professional development.

  • Week 1

    Gathering feedback on your volunteering activities

    • Defining feedback

      Gathering and using feedback is an important process to develop successful volunteering. How might feedback be used to improve?

    • Linking feedback to objectives

      Clear objectives help you gather meaningful and focused feedback. What did you set out to achieve in your STEM activity?

    • Feedback from young people

      Include opportunities to assess how effective you are during your STEM activity. What feedback will you get from young people?

    • Feedback from educators

      Teachers, group leaders and other educators can provide you rich feedback. What questions will you ask to get focused feedback?

  • Week 2

    Using feedback to improve

    • Improving activities through self-reflection

      Feedback from young people and educators should be combined with your self-reflection. How much time do you give yourself to stop, think and reflect?

    • Developing yourself

      Use feedback to improve yourself, as well as your STEM activity. What are your personal goals?

    • Collaborating to improve

      Collaborating with other people and organisations can support your development and improve your STEM activity. When was the last time you asked for peer input?

    • Evaluating STEM activities for impact

      Look at the big picture and how you contribute to broader objectives. How do we evaluate what we do is relevant to our employer and other organisations?

  • Collect immediate feedback about practical STEM Activities using different tools with groups of young people.
  • Reflect on feedback to improve presentation skills with young people and the effectiveness of a STEM Activity.
  • Contribute towards employer and programme evaluation of STEM volunteering activities.
  • Identify further opportunities for professional development and skills development relating to volunteering and inspiring young people in STEM subjects.

Who is the course for?

This course has been created for anyone volunteering with young people in STEM. This includes STEM Ambassadors in the UK, youth volunteering group organisers, field trip educators, scout groups (and similar), outdoor pursuit centres, outreach from NGOs. You will need knowledge of STEM subjects or experience of working in a STEM environment.
