Congratulations on getting this far. By now you will have an understanding of adolescence and the main developmental domains characterising this stage, that is:

  • physical
  • social
  • emotional
  • cognitive

You will also have an appreciation of the complex processes underway in the adolescent brain as it literally prunes away unused synapses during this sensitive period of brain development. You’ve considered the heightened emotional responses typical of adolescents and how these are influenced by the limbic system, internal development of the brain and adolescents’ heightened social awareness and sensitivity.

Coming up next week

Join us next week to look more closely at social and emotional wellbeing in adolescence. So that you can reflect on the topic and gain insights about what you can do to support adolescents, from their perspective, we’ll introduce you to a young male and a young female student. We’ll also discuss how you can enhance adolescent social and emotional wellbeing as they engage in learning, through an interview with an experienced classroom teacher.

To promote an attitude of possibilities rather than problems when interacting with adolescents, we’ll explore a couple of positive youth development (PYD) frameworks. Importantly, you’ll also have the opportunity to develop your own personal framework.
