Congratulations on completing week 1!

This week

This week, we have covered:

  • An introduction to the challenges of working in low resource settings – illustrated by Dr Mol’s experiences in Zambia.
  • Information to gather when deciding what to donate – and the importance of asking local staff.
  • An example of a small donation of blood pressure machines by Dr Hemming.
  • The lifecycle of medical equipment, and the importance of considering what is needed at every stage when planning a donation.
  • Common assumptions and risks to avoid when donating medicinal equipment.

Next week

Next week, we will look at more practical aspects of donating equipment, like sourcing the equipment, thinking about the different options to source the equipment and the pros and cons of using local or international suppliers to source the equipment.

We will also cover topics on assessing the quality of equipment which you plan to purchase and considering what the on going maintenance might be for such equipment including budgeting and hidden costs.
