Learning Outcomes for Week 2

By the end of Week 2 you will have an increased:

1. understanding that antibiotic resistance to first line UTI antibiotics such as trimethoprim is increasing.

2. intention to carefully assess women’s urinary symptoms to determine the likelihood of UTI.

3. understanding that some patients may not actually have a proven UTI (symptom dependent), so may not need antibiotics following consultation.

4. intention to use nitrofurantoin first line for most women with acute uncomplicated UTI.

5. knowledge of the value of Pivmecillinam for the treatment of UTI, especially in the elderly.

6. intention to encourage self-care in the management of women with urinary symptoms.

7. intention to advise anti-inflammatories rather than antibiotics in the management of women with mild or 2 or less urinary symptoms.

8. intention to share written information such as the TARGET UTI Leaflet with patients consulting with urinary symptoms.

9. intention to undertake an audit of management, or antibiotic use of suspected UTI in your clinical setting.
