Overcome the challenges of teaching science remotely to your secondary students

Due to COVID-19 related school closures around the world, many teachers are having to adjust their teaching.

Whilst teaching remotely may be new, this course will help you to develop new online and offline teaching strategies for supporting learning at home and at a distance.

You’ll consider the issues of student engagement, time management, assessment and feedback, and the role of parents, as well as how to keep up with practical science activities.

You’ll draw upon the resources you already have, use a variety of asynchronous teaching and learning tools, and collaborate with other teachers in designing teaching sequences.

Syllabus

  • Week 1

    Asynchronous learning

    • Setting expectations

Being clear about expectations, and involving students and parents in your planning, can ease the transition into remote teaching. What does the research say?

    • Blending synchronous and asynchronous learning

Different approaches to remote learning suit different types of content and students. How do we get the mix right?

    • Asynchronous teaching

How can we structure asynchronous activities to make best use of the advantages, and support students with some of the difficulties?

    • Teaching strategies: asynchronous

There are some teaching techniques that we use a lot in the classroom. How can we carry out an online version of these activities?

  • Week 2

    Independent learning and practical science

    • Teaching strategies: synchronous

How do you structure a live online session to meet the needs of students?

    • Assessment for learning

Supporting students to work independently can improve learning outcomes, focusing on getting students to reflect on their learning and the progress they’re making.

    • Virtual experiments

Science is a practical subject. How do we continue to develop enquiry-based skills?

    • Reviewing your professional development

Review your professional development and plan your next steps to sustain and develop the way you plan for learning.
