Intellectual property (IP)

This step discusses issues around intellectual property, and how to ensure that you are adhering to copyright laws.

It’s important when working with film to give some consideration to intellectual property. Intellectual property governs ownership of creative works such as inventions, literary or artistic works, such as films.

When a studio creates a film they have the right to determine how that image or film is used, distributed and exhibited. So when we use film in class we need to ensure we are adhering to copyright guidance (our guide to accessing film content for use in class is also attached).

The BBC has useful guidance on making use of copyright material, for example from television, music, films and websites, which can be found here: What is Copyright?

If you would like to do further work on this topic in class then you can download our Creating Movie Magic resource using the links below.

Our resources have been designed to correspond with selected film titles from the Into Film catalogue, that relate to areas on the curriculum. Below is a downloadable document that details the current curriculum for all countries UK wide.
