Introduction to Week 3

Welcome back to the third week of Teaching Programming in Primary Schools. I hope you had fun in week two, learning about repetition through making your own art, music and animations.

I’m Rik Cross, the lead educator for this course, and this week I’ll be introducing you to variables. We’ll first look at the concept of a variable through real-world examples. Then you’ll make use of variables in a range of hands-on, cross-curricular Scratch projects. This will include making a voting app, an interactive story and a ghost-catching game. As with previous weeks, these are activities that are transferable as introductory projects for your learners.

There will be plenty of opportunity for discussion with other course members during this session. You’ll share and discuss the code you write, including any bugs or problems you encounter along the way. Remember that spotting and fixing bugs in your code is an important part of the learning process! You’ll also have opportunity to share and discuss ideas for teaching variables to your learners.
