Case studies

So far this week you have engaged with the research evidence around effective assessment and feedback, and with how technology might support these practices.

To help you explore some of these ideas further and see how schools have approached them in practice, we have collated a variety of case studies for you to explore across a range of contexts. You don’t need to explore all of the case studies in this section, just choose one or two to spend your time on this week (you can always return to the other case studies at a later date).

Think back to the statements you reflected on at the end of Week 3:

1. My pupils act on feedback received to improve future work
2. Assessment in the classroom helps to inform my future planning
3. Marking is carried out efficiently and does not consume lesson planning time

You might like to focus on the one or two case studies that seem to fit the areas above which present the most challenge for you. When you’re watching or reading the case studies, you should focus primarily on the teaching and learning practice the case study portrays, rather than the specific technology used. It might be possible to achieve the same result as portrayed in a case study, even if the tools they’ve chosen won’t be suitable for your own context.

Case studies in this week of the course include:

Feedback and assessment: whole-class feedback (1, 2, 3) – In this video, we see a primary school teacher leading a lesson where pupils share their work from a previous lesson and the class carry out a critique with the teacher guiding pupils towards focusing on elements she had picked up in a look at their work.

Feedback and assessment: audio notes (1, 3) – In this video, we see how audio notes can be an efficient and action focused feedback method.

Feedback and assessment: Microsoft OneNote for feedback in one place (1, 2, 3) – In this video, we see how the use of an online tool enables efficient marking that leads to action for the pupils.

Feedback and assessment: self, peer and teacher assessment (1) – In this video, we see how technology supports an innovative solution to peer feedback and reflection on performance in PE.

Feedback and assessment: Zipgrade (3) – In this video, we see how a low technology tool (only the teacher needs a device) can be used to quickly grade multiple choice tests.

Feedback and assessment: comparative judgement (2, 3) – In this case study, we learn how an online comparative judgement tool can help to make marking and assessment more efficient and effective.
