Last week, we learned all about the fundamentals of genetics. This week, we are going to focus on how and when genomic errors can be introduced and how these can result in human disease. Not only rare developmental conditions, but we will also examine how genetic factors influence the development of cancer and other common disorders. We will look at the different patterns of genetic inheritance and hear from patients and their families about the impact that a genetic diagnosis has had on their lives.

Welcome to Week 2

Course educator, Dr Katie Snape, Clinical Geneticist, introduces Week 2 of the course.

By the end of this week, you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate the different mechanisms by which genetic errors can be introduced into the genome.
  2. Contrast the different outcomes of somatic versus constitutional errors in the genetic code.
  3. Describe how errors in the genetic code can lead to an individual developing a genetic condition.
  4. Explain the different modes of inheritance of single gene mutations.
  5. Explore the impact of a genetic condition on the lives of patients.
