The Future for Vaccines and Antimicrobial Resistance
In a climate of limited resources it is important to prioritise research priorities, policy focus and investment decisions on vaccines that can have the greatest impact on health.
In a recent assessment of the potential of vaccines to tackle AMR, the Wellcome Trust examined WHO priority pathogens for AMR and advised how best to ensure effective vaccines are available in the future (see figure below). In some circumstances this is likely to be achieved by simply increasing uptake of licensed, effective vaccines, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. In the case of other bacteria it involves funding to advance research and development (R&D) of promising vaccine candidates.
