    In this first activity we welcome you to the MOOC on 'Sustainable Management in the Extractive Industry'. We will introduce relevant topics and provide an overview of the coming weeks. We are excited to have you on board.

    Gain an overview of the EU policy landscape for the extractive sector and discuss current issues and challenges of the sector.

  • The many facetts of sustainability

    Get insights into the different lenses through which the SUMEX project approaches the analysis of sustainability in the extractive sector, these include the concepts of Leverage Points and the Institutional Resource Regime (IRR).

  • Assignment

    We showcase three different health & safety approaches by large mining companies to show the wide application of H&S. Find out about approaches to community and workers' H&S as well as how to establish a company's safety culture.

    Lia from a national park authority and Michael advising companies on how to design projects discuss about their experiences of how mineral extraction affects biodiversity: how to best assess impacts or design for rehabilitation.

  • Highlighting real life examples

    We describe challenges of a quarry situated near a nature protected area in Spain. While trying to contribute to conservation objectives, the quarry aims for an extension of its operation.

    Anders emphasises the importance of sustainability reporting and points out current challenges and most recent developments in this area. He also discusses the various stakeholders who benefit from thorough reporting practices.

    Listen to our experts discuss different ways in which standards, such as IRMA, work towards improving reporting practices. Furthermore, they delve into which sustainability topics should be reported in the extractive industry.

  • Highlighting real life examples

    We highlight a mining company's efforts to develop a tool for reporting metrics related to quarry restoration, such as an increase in net biodiversity and ecosystem services, and integrating these results into their annual report.
